Conviction Raises Questions About Eligibility

Can Trump Run for President Again?

Conviction Raises Questions about Eligibility

New York Jury Convicts Trump on Felony Charges

In a historic moment that could have a major impact on his campaign for a second presidential term, a Manhattan jury on Thursday convicted former President Donald Trump of all 34 felony charges of falsifying business records.

The indictment and other ongoing criminal investigations of Donald Trump raise the real, if still remote, possibility of his being barred from seeking office again. The Constitution sets very few eligibility requirements for the presidency, but one of them is that the candidate must not have been convicted of a "high crime or misdemeanor."

Mr. Trump has been free on bail throughout the trial. If the verdict is guilty, he will probably still be able to leave the court as a free man until his sentencing hearing. However, if he is sentenced to prison, he would be ineligible to run for president again.
