French Open 2023: Zverev defeats Dimitrov to reach quarterfinals
Alexander Zverev storms into the French Open quarterfinals with a dominant display against Grigor Dimitrov.
The German star outclassed the Bulgarian 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 in the night session on Sunday, setting up a quarterfinal clash against either Carlos Alcaraz or Karen Khachanov.
Zverev was in imperious form from the outset, breaking Dimitrov's serve twice in the first set to take it 6-1. The German continued to dominate in the second set, breaking Dimitrov's serve once again to take a 4-2 lead. Dimitrov fought back to level the set at 4-4, but Zverev broke his serve again in the 10th game to take the set 6-4.
The third set was more competitive, but Zverev ultimately proved too strong for Dimitrov. The German broke Dimitrov's serve twice in the set to take it 6-3 and seal his place in the quarterfinals.
Zverev's victory was his second over Dimitrov in as many meetings this year. The German now has a 3-1 head-to-head record against the Bulgarian.
Zverev will be looking to reach the semifinals of the French Open for the first time since 2020. The German has never reached the final of a Grand Slam tournament.
