The Evolution of European Fashion: 1500-1600
1500-1550: Opulence and Volume
During this period, European fashion was characterized by thick, voluminous garments. Women in England, as described in Francois Boucher's "A History of Costume in the West," wore brightly colored dresses with large shoulder rolls and fur lining. Colors such as red, yellow, purple, pink, and green were popular.
1550-1600: Increased Opulence and Black Dominance
In the latter half of the 16th century, European fashion became even more opulent. Black became the dominant color at the Spanish court, often accented with gold. Women often wore wired horned headdresses with veils, as can be seen in the image of Christine de Pisan wearing a cotehardie.
